In reply to <a href="https://thegeriatricdietitian.com/nectar-thick-liquids-helping-seniors-stay-safe/comment-page-1/#comment-1601">D. Daniel</a>.

In most cases, a barium swallow test (also called a swallow study) will be conducted. It's a neat test that uses x-rays to record what happens in the mouth and throat when someone swallows foods and drinks of different consistencies. If the swallow study shows someone aspirating on thin liquids (i.e. the thin liquid goes down the wrong tube), then thick liquids are typically recommended. Speech therapists are amazing at conducting evaluations and making the best recommendations for the individual. Check with your doctor for the recommended evaluation frequency. It can vary by person. Best of luck!

These are questions rather than comments.
How does the speech therapist tell if a person needs to have thickened fluids, a soft diet, etc.? Is it just feeling the neck when the person is swallowing? How often should the person be evaluated? If the person is evaluated when tired or sick, will that affect the outcome?
